This week’s meditation focuses on the concept of being deeply rooted so as to be able to expand. We utilize the metaphor of being a deeply rooted tree, with a vast and broad canopy, which mirrors the phrase “As above, so below.”
“As above, so below.” originates from ancient Hermeticism, a philosophical and spiritual tradition rooted in the teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus—a mythical figure combining elements of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. The phrase is found in the Emerald Tablet, a foundational Hermetic text believed to have been written between the 6th and 8th centuries but drawing on much older ideas.
In its original context, the full line reads: “That which is below is like that which is above, and that which is above is like that which is below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing.” This expresses the Hermetic principle of correspondence, suggesting a fundamental unity between the macrocosm (the heavens, the universe) and the microcosm (human beings, Earth). In other words, patterns and truths are reflected across all levels of existence.
Throughout history, the phrase has been used in mystical, alchemical, and philosophical traditions to explain the connection between spiritual and physical realms. Alchemists saw it as a guide to transforming matter and the self, believing that by understanding the material world, one could grasp divine principles.
In modern times, “As above, so below” has found new life in popular culture, appearing in literature, film, and esoteric teachings. It often symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things and the idea that internal states can shape external reality.
May your week be blessed with love and filled with light,
Lisa Marie
